Management tips: religious difference at work

Thanks to Russell Ruak for this guest post; Russell runs a series of New York offices for a wide-spread accounting firm and knows how tough it can be to deal with human resource issues, especially when religion is involved. He recommends human resource professionals consult legal compliance departments if possible if there is ever a question about what kind of action needs to be taken.

At LCP we also advise that HR professionals and managers for smaller businesses ensure they are up-to-date with relevant employment legislation such the Equality Act 2010.

Combine self-awareness and action to be a successful woman entrepreneur

Continuing our spring guest blogging season, today we welcome a guest blogger from the US; Penny Cooper is a senior article writer with copywriting service firm Godot Media. She has interests ranging from social media and copywriting to following web technologies and trends.

With the glass ceiling ever prescient when it comes to statistics on women’s promotions and salaries, along with the argument that many current UK government cuts disproportionately affect women, Penny’s post is a timely piece advising women on how to succeed as entrepreneurs.

How to communicate effectively when leading remotely

Today we welcome guest blogger Sue Davison from the Institute of Virtual Leadership. We’ve published a blog before on how employees can manage upwards when working remotely and today Sue provides some helpful advice to managers, on how to lead effectively when managing remote teams. This spring we’re opening our blog up to guest posters who want to have their say about current issues in management, learning and development – contact us if you would like to write for us.

Sue Davison - Tips for leading remotely

It‘s that time of year again when many of our managers are submitting performance reviews, and we start hoping that a bonus or raise might be on the cards. For fans of the US Office, the episode where Dwight jumps around psyching himself up for his performance review may come to mind (see Youtube).

The problem is that a good review relies on good communication between the reviewer and the employee, both for the process of the review itself and for the good planning by all parties for the period leading up to it. This level of communication can be difficult in a lot of cases but, for those of us working virtually, effective two-way communication is a real challenge.

How do employees become executives? Three steps to standing out and improving your relationship with your boss

We’re inviting guest posters to the LCP blog this spring – contact us if you are interested in writing on management and learning & development.

It can sometimes feel that when you’re an employee, you’re a cog in the wheel that keeps things running. To be given greater responsibility and improve your job satisfaction, the challenge is to get noticed by those in charge of running the wheel. This is also necessary if you want to go from being an employee to being an executive. There’s no app for that, but there are a few things you can do to start your climb up the corporate ladder.

Social media at work: have you planned for when your employees leave?

We’re continuing our spring ‘Guest Blogger Season’ here on the LCP blog and today thanks goes to employment solicitor Ruby Dinsmore for this guest post, which explains some of the complexities involved when it comes to social media and ownership. Ruby works for Brighton & Hove and south-east based Acumen Business Law, who run occasional seminars on employment law, including one on social media in Brighton this Wednesday; see their blog for information and to follow future updates.

Customer services and social media – are you managing your reputation?

The #Customer #service #fail

Today we warmly welcome blog guest poster Tom Falls, who writes for a UK call centre, helping to improve the quality of customer service with call handling and virtual assistant services. In this blog, Tom warns of the importance of managing online customer communications. Tom’s post is part of our spring ‘guest blogger season’ – contact us if you would like to write for us.

At LCP we would also remind organisations that promptly and openly managing customer feedback will also have an internal effect, with staff likely to be more motivated and engaged to work for you. For example Marks and Spencer’s HR director noted the positive reception amongst staff of their frank ‘we boobed’ apology, following a Facebook campaign against their higher prices for larger bra sizes (see People Management 2011).

One upon a time a poor customer service experience was confined to being discussed amongst your small group of friends, family or work colleagues. Companies could rest contentedly knowing that the likelihood of their customer service errors reaching the mass public was almost zero.

For the joy of the consumer and the displeasure of business owners there is a game changing development on the frontlines, social media. The numbers behind social media are astounding, the biggest player Facebook, has over 500 million users, which equates to one in every 13 people on the face of the Planet. It’s also estimated that over half of these 500 million use Facebook every single day. And that’s just one of the big social networks.
