What is the Myers Briggs Type Indicator® (MBTI) tool?

“The world’s number one tool for improved self-awareness and self development” – (MBTI®)

The Myers Briggs Type Indicator® tool is the most widely used personality assessment tool, administering as many as 2 million simple questionnaires annually to individuals. Today it can be taken electronically or with pen and paper, is available in 21 languages and has a wide range of learning and development applications including improving individual and team performance, explore careers and reduce workplace conflict.

There are two steps: the MBTI Step I tool will identify an individual’s psychological type according to four basic preferences and provide a common language to understand how they interact with the world and other people; the MBTI Step II tool explores how an individual expresses their preferences – by increasing self-awareness, this insightful tool can constructively help both individual and group development, demonstrating that workplace differences needn’t create friction.

How could the Myers Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) instrument be applied?

MBTI reporting has a diverse range of applications, in a corporate context these could include:

  • Leadership development: alerting leaders to their style of leadership and how others will respond to it
  • Development and coaching: helping candidates understand their own personality type, their preferred working styles, their decision making or communication strengths and ways in which they can develop
  • Conflict management, team fit and improving working relationships
  • Communication and interpersonal skills
  • Organisational change
  • Stress management
  • Career guidance

Who is MBTI assessment suitable for?

As self-awareness and self-development instruments, MBTI Step I and MBTI Step II tools are suitable for all employees up to board level. As tools for helping individuals understand how they express their personality and present themselves to others, they are highly recommended for leadership development.
